Building a business often feels like juggling countless tasks, ideas, and challenges. Yet, some of the most valuable lessons come from stripping away the noise and focusing on what truly matters. Managing three very different businesses—Up at Dawn Tallow, Brew Crew (not open yet), and True North Plumbing & Heating—has taught me that simplicity is not just a strategy but a necessity for success.

Finding Clarity in the chaos
Looking at my whiteboard can sometimes feel like looking at three entirely different lives. You’ve got Up at Dawn Tallow (handcrafted bison tallow skincare), Brew Crew (our new coffee shop opening in just a few weeks!), and True North Plumbing & Heating.
On paper, they have absolutely nothing in common. But managing them has forced me to find clarity in totally different ways.
When I first launched Up at Dawn Tallow, the biggest lesson was the power of simplicity. I fell into the classic trap of trying to offer every scent and blend variety under the sun, which was just overwhelming and burnt me out. The moment I stripped it back to a few high-quality, staple options, everything clicked.
True North Plumbing & Heating, on the other hand, was a completely different kind of challenge. My biggest learning curve there wasn't about simplifying—it was about absorbing an entire industry from the ground up. I had to learn the ins and outs of plumbing, how water heaters actually work, and how to anticipate exactly what a customer needs the moment they call in a panic. It continues to teach me that clarity doesn't just come from doing less; sometimes it comes from doing the hard work to truly understand the mechanics of your business.
Why Simplicity Matters
Simplicity helps businesses in several key ways:
Improves focus: Concentrating on fewer products or services allows better quality and attention to detail.
Reduces costs: Streamlining operations cuts unnecessary expenses and waste.
Enhances customer experience: Clear choices and straightforward services make it easier for customers to engage.
Supports growth: A simple foundation is easier to scale and adapt over time.
In the case of Brew Crew, even though it’s not open yet, the planning phase has emphasized simplicity. Instead of launching with a complex menu, the plan is to start with a few signature brews and build from there. This approach reduces risk and allows for learning from real customer feedback.
Practical Steps to Simplify Your Business
Here are some actionable ways to apply simplicity, inspired by these three businesses:
1. Identify Your Core Offering
Look at your products or services and ask which ones truly define your brand and bring the most value. Focus on those and consider pausing or dropping less essential options.
2. Streamline Processes
Examine your workflows and remove unnecessary steps. For example, Up at Dawn Tallow simplified candle-making by standardizing recipes and packaging, which saved time and reduced errors.
3. Communicate Clearly
Use simple, direct language in marketing and customer interactions. True North Plumbing & Heating found that clear explanations of services and pricing built trust and reduced confusion.
4. Prioritize Customer Needs
Listening to your gut as a business owner is just as important as listening to the crowd. For Brew Crew, I intentionally chose a simple, focused menu over a huge selection. The last thing I want is to overwhelm people right out of the gate. Starting with a few high-quality options lets us test the waters, keep operations smooth, and give customers exactly what they want without the added chaos.
5. Use Technology Wisely
Adopt tools that automate routine tasks without adding complexity. For instance, scheduling software helped True North Plumbing & Heating manage appointments efficiently.
Lessons Learned From Each Business
Up at Dawn Tallow: Quality over quantity matters. Simplifying the product line helped build a loyal customer base and made production manageable.
True North Plumbing & Heating: Clear communication and focusing on core services improve customer trust and operational efficiency.
Brew Crew: Starting small and focusing on a few signature products reduces risk and allows for better customer connection.
These lessons show that simplicity is not about doing less but about doing what matters best.
Embracing Simplicity as a Growth Strategy
Simplicity creates a strong foundation for growth. When a business is clear about its purpose and offerings, it can adapt more easily to changes and scale sustainably. It also frees up time and energy to innovate where it counts.
For entrepreneurs juggling multiple ventures, simplicity prevents burnout and keeps the focus sharp. It encourages making decisions based on what adds real value rather than chasing every opportunity.
